UNDERSTANDING & UTILISING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

You might have noticed that many people around us with high Academic qualifications failed in their life, where as normal people with average education and normal intelligence  achieved average marks  in their curriculums are well placed and leading a successful life, how it happens?? Nothing but their EQ level is higher than the highly intelligent people.

What is emotional intelligence or in short EIQ or EQ (Emotional Intelligent Quotient)? What is the difference between IQ and EQ? IQ is related to your brain intelligence, People are hereditarily born with certain level of intelligence , but through education, continuous practice and experience, you can sharpen your intelligence.

EQ is all about being able to identify all your emotions and being able to handle it properly. EQ is a skill that has to be acquired , cultivated by practice on yourself and interactions with others. Knowing how you and others feel about your emotions and handle according to the situations. In order to keep a higher standard of EQ , you have to achieve some skills , Psychologists call it as SOFT skills.

Self awareness and mental training can help us believe ourselves even under severe pressure and enable us to achieve miracles in our lives. We can thus overcome our mental blocks and self doubts and tap our actions and environment without conscious or deliberate effort. Normally IQ contributes only 20 percent of overall success , but rest 80% of a human being’s success  determines his/her EQ

Most often ,our expectation level determines our state of happiness .The more we expect and the more we compare ourselves to people who are materialistically better off than we are , the more frustrated and unhappy we become.

Some people tend to reach a healthier ,more optimal level of functioning than the average people .They are known as self actualized people. Such people are relatively free from major psychological problems and have made the best possible use of their talents and strengths.

There are five main elements that constitute Emotional Intelligence and working on these areas can help raise your EQ quotient

  2. Motivation
  3. Self Regulation
  4. Empathy, and
  5. Social skills

These are qualities that you spot in a good leader and these are aspects that you should work on if you are someone looking to raise EQ. Let’s look at each aspect individually.


Self-Awareness

This is  the key to sustainability and going forward in one’s life. It is very important to know what your preferences are and what you are capable of. So what exactly can you do to be aware of the true self?

This is where motivation enters. It is a guide that propels and stimulates your intellect to move forward. Motivation is an important metric to consider when measuring the EQ. So what does a motivated person do?

  • Commitment: Shows commitment in tandem with the goals.
  • Initiative: Readiness to act on opportunities

Empathy

Awareness of others' feelings, needs, and concerns

A good leader is not sympathetic but empathetic. There is a difference not many understand but understanding that difference is what will make you stand out and fare well on the EQ index. How do you empathize?

Social Skills

EQ is incomplete without these skills because these are what make you survive in a social set-up and perform well. Let’s look at what comprises these skills:

  • Conflict management: Negotiating and resolving disagreements.
